namad iranian tribal felt rugs Voted "best one-of-a-kind rugs" by San Francisco Magazine in the Best of the Bay July 2004 issue. |
Namad making is the ancient craft of felting wool.
Namads are found in several regions of Central Asia and the Middle East.
This craft is not widely known and is dying out as economic pressures force peoples to migrate
towards urban centers and the demand for handmade goods decreases.
Peace Industry is proud to introduce the art of the Iranian artisan felt rugs. We work with individual felters in Iran. We commission them to make their own traditional designs.
This is the first time namads are available for sale to the general public in the U.S..
Namads are commonly produced in regions populated by nomadic sheep herders.
- The method for making a namad is done entirely by felting.
- The design is first layed out from a pre-dyed ball of wool.
- Then a pile of fluffed wool is placed over it and rolled together in a tarp.
- The roll is rolled on the ground enabling the felting process and opened periodically to add water.
- Because wool is naturally fire and stain resistant these rugs are extremely useful and durable.
- Traditionally they are used in front of a fireplace and in high traffic areas.
- They are easy to clean with cold water and mild soap.
